Great question. Most self-tanners contain a visible colour guide — a bronzing agent that lets you see where you have applied the product while you work. The guide colour is what typically transfers onto sheets and clothes.

Instead it relies on natural DHA — the active ingredient in all self-tanning products — which reacts with the amino acids in the dead skin cells on your skin's surface to create your tan colour. The DHA develops within the skin over 6–8 hours. Because the development happens inside the skin rather than sitting on top of it, there is nothing on the surface to rub off.
