Natural Exfoliating Glove — How to Use It and Why It Matters

If you have ever woken up to a patchy, uneven self-tan orange elbows, streaky ankles, colour that faded in three days rather than seven the problem almost certainly was not your tanning mousse. It was your skin preparation.
Exfoliation is the step most people skip or rush, and it is the step that makes the biggest difference to how your tan looks, how evenly it develops, and how long it lasts. Our Natural Exfoliating Glove was built around a technique that has been perfecting skin for thousands of years and once you understand why it works, you will never skip this step again.
For centuries, women across Turkey, Morocco, and the Middle East have gathered in hammam bath houses — ancient communal spaces built around the ritual of deep cleansing. At the heart of every hammam session is a kese a coarse woven mitt used to physically lift dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Not scrub them. Lift them. The difference is profound. This is the technique and the weave behind our Natural Exfoliating Glove.
Why exfoliation matters so much for self-tan
Your skin naturally renews itself every 28 days shedding old skin cells from the surface and replacing them with fresh ones underneath. When dead skin cells accumulate on the surface they create an uneven texture that causes self-tanning solution to absorb inconsistently. The driest areas elbows, knees, ankles, heels accumulate the most dead skin and absorb the most DHA, producing the dark, orange patches that give fake tan a bad reputation.
Removing that layer of dead skin before you tan changes everything. Your mousse glides on evenly. The DHA develops consistently across your whole body. And because you are tanning fresh, healthy skin rather than a layer that is about to shed naturally, your result lasts significantly longer.
A self-tan that lasts seven days on properly exfoliated skin will last three days on skin that has not been prepared. The mousse is the same. The difference is entirely in the prep. This is why we built our glove before we launched our mousse.
Ready to experience the difference? Our Natural Exfoliating Glove is crafted in Turkey using the traditional hammam weave the deepest exfoliation possible with just water.

There are many exfoliating products on the market sugar scrubs, chemical exfoliants, loofahs, synthetic mitts, silk gloves. Here is why we chose none of them.
Sugar scrubs and chemical exfoliants work on the surface of the skin. They dissolve or polish the outermost layer but do not physically lift the dead skin away. The result is smoother skin but not the deep preparation that a hammam-style weave achieves.
Synthetic fibres are man-made, cannot absorb moisture or dirt correctly, and can cause irritation on sensitive skin. Silk gloves harm silkworms not aligned with our vegan values.
Our Natural Exfoliating Glove is made from 100% plant-based fibre, woven in the traditional Turkish hammam style. The specific weave creates a texture firm enough to physically lift dead skin cells but gentle enough to use on your face, décolletage, and sensitive areas. It works with just warm water no soap, no chemicals, no additives.
"After trying numerous materials, we finally found the perfect weave — one that dates back to the ancient Turkish hammam baths. The tradition of deep exfoliation has been passed down through generations." — Annabelle, Founder
What exfoliating does for your skin
Removes dead skin cells to reveal fresh, smooth skin underneath leaving you visibly brighter within days of regular use.
The single most important step before self-tanning. Even exfoliation means even colour development and a tan that lasts twice as long.
Regular use prevents ingrown hairs by keeping follicles clear of dead skin build-up essential after waxing or shaving.
The physical motion of exfoliation stimulates blood flow, promoting healthier skin cell renewal and a natural glow.
Regular mechanical exfoliation smooths KP bumps on the backs of arms and thighs one of the most consistent results our customers report.
Unclogs pores and removes the build-up that leads to blackheads and congestion works on both face and body.
The most effective way to remove old, fading self-tan before reapplying. No harsh chemicals just the glove and warm water.
100% plant-based fibre. No silkworms, no synthetic plastics, no microplastics entering the water supply. Biodegradable.
How to use the Natural Exfoliating Glove — step by step
Soak your skin for at least 5 minutes
This is the most important step and the most commonly skipped. Warm water softens the dead skin layer, making it far easier to lift. If you feel like you have to scrub hard, your skin has not softened enough yet. The glove should glide with minimal pressure.
Move out of the running water
Step away from the shower stream so your skin is damp but not saturated with running water. Wet the glove thoroughly. Excess water on the skin actually reduces the friction needed for the glove to lift dead skin effectively.
Long strokes from ankles upward
Work in long, firm strokes moving upward from your feet. Use circular motions on areas like elbows and knees. Apply light-to-medium pressure for no more than 2 minutes on each area. You will see visible results rolls of grey dead skin lifting away. This is completely normal and exactly what should happen.
Pay extra attention to dry zones
Elbows, knees, ankles, heels, and the backs of upper arms (where KP tends to sit). These areas accumulate the most dead skin and will absorb the most self-tanning solution if not properly prepared. Give them an extra pass.
Rinse and moisturise
Rinse off thoroughly to remove all lifted dead skin cells. Pat dry gently. If you are exfoliating for everyday skin health — moisturise immediately to lock in hydration. If you are exfoliating as pre-tan prep — wait 24 hours before applying your self-tanning mousse to allow your skin to fully settle.
"I was sceptical at first, but after using this glove my skin has never felt better. It's like a spa treatment in my own home."
When to exfoliate before a self-tan
The ideal timing is 24 hours before applying your self-tanning mousse. Exfoliating immediately before tanning can leave your skin slightly sensitised and your pores temporarily open, which can cause uneven DHA absorption.
Exfoliating 24 hours prior gives your skin time to fully settle while still ensuring you are applying the tan to the freshest possible canvas. For best results pair it with our Invisible Self Tanning Mousse the clear formula that goes on after the glove has done its work.
The perfect combination — glove and mousse together. Our Tanners Dream Bundle includes everything you need for a complete pre-tan routine.

Do you use the exfoliating glove on dry or wet skin?
Always wet. Allow your skin to soften in a warm shower or bath for at least 5 minutes first. If you feel like you need to scrub hard, you have not allowed your skin to soften enough. The glove should lift dead skin with minimal pressure on properly soaked skin.
How often should I use an exfoliating glove?
Once a week is ideal for most skin types. This is enough to maintain smooth, healthy skin without over-exfoliating. If you have particularly sensitive skin start with once every two weeks and build up. Always cease use immediately if you experience any irritation or have open cuts, sunburn, or active skin conditions.
How long does the glove last?
We recommend replacing your glove every 4 to 6 weeks. Even with regular cleaning, exfoliating gloves accumulate dead skin cells and can become a breeding ground for bacteria over time. Rinse thoroughly after each use, squeeze out excess water, and hang to dry completely. Because ours is made from natural plant-based fibre it is also biodegradable — so disposing of it responsibly is simple.
Can I use the glove on my face?
Yes, our glove is gentle enough for facial use. Use extra light pressure on the face and avoid the eye area. Many customers use it on their décolletage and neck as part of their pre-tan face routine. For face-specific tan application, pair it with our Sunless Tanning Face and Hand Brush.
Is it good for removing old fake tan?
Yes, this is one of the most popular uses. Soak well in a warm bath or shower, then use the glove in long strokes over areas where old tan is fading. The mechanical action lifts the old colour with your dead skin layer, giving you an even clean canvas before reapplying.
Why plant-based fibre instead of silk or synthetic?
Silk production harms silkworms — not aligned with our vegan values. Synthetic fibres are plastic-based, cannot absorb moisture correctly, and shed microplastics into the water system. Plant-based fibre is breathable, effective, gentle on sensitive skin, and fully biodegradable. We spent a long time finding the right material before settling on this weave.
